Every baby needs the warm nurturing love that only a mother can provide. Of course, this applies to puppies and kittens too.
The Pennsylvania SPCA warns that the first several weeks of a puppy and kitten’s life are the most critical for survival and it is in those early weeks that the mother is needed the most.
Puppies and kittens should never be immediately taken away from their mother. They rely on their mother not only for milk, warmth and security but also for all of the vital information they need to survive including walking, eating, playing and socializing. This important information shapes their personalities for the future as well. Removing kittens too soon can result in a cat who can potentially become more aggressive and their learning abilities can become impaired. Dogs need this crucial time to learn to socialize properly with their littermates.
The PSPCA is always in need of foster volunteers to provide loving care for all the animals including nursing mothers and babies and those babies that have been abandoned. And remember, you can do your part by having your pet spayed and neutered. For more information, contact the PSPCA at (215) 426-6300.
