Penn Football Contingency Heading to Japan

by KYW's Matt Leon

A contingent from the University of Pennsylvania football team is headed overseas later this month to take part in the Ivy-Samurai Bowl in Tokyo.

Penn head football coach Al Bagnoli says football is becoming more and more popular in Japan, and as a result, its become an annual event for a representatives from two different Ivy League teams to head to Tokyo for a week to take part in this All-Star Game called the Ivy-Samurai Bowl.

Bagnoli says this year the Quakers and the Princeton Tigers got the call:

"They are going to take I believe the 10-12 Tokyo area Japanese area teams that play football, select an all-star team, and then split that all-star team in half where Princeton gets half and Penn gets half, approximately.  Each will get 50 players to coach."

Seven coaching staff members and four former players from both teams will make this trip later this month.  The Ivy Samurai Bowl is scheduled for June 18th.  Last year, the Brown contingent beat the group led by Columbia 38-21.
