Local Expert Dissects the Star Quality of Susan Boyle

by KYW's Lynne Adkins

Radio, TV, and the Internet are filled with details on the life of a 47-year-old amateur singer from Great Britain. But why are we so fascinated with Susan Boyle?  One local expert had some answers.

(Susan Boyle singing:)  "I dreamed a dream in time gone by...!"

Susan Boyle skyrocketed to fame with her audition for the British version of "American Idol."  Now, the Internet is buzzing with the video of the middle-aged woman who is clearly not the your typical diva.

Dr. Steven Kreinberg (right), associate professor of music studies at Temple University, has already used the clip in class. He says part of the fascination is the song and how she delivers the emotion of "I Dreamed a Dream," from the musical Les Misérables:

"She's now living this dream. It's just turned for her, and you're watching that moment.  I think it's a magical thing that everyone taps into, and we all want those types of dreams to happen to us."

He says the appeal is universal, that people of all age can relate to and root for her success, because she gives us hope for our dreams.
