Pa. Dept. of Corrections Releases Names of New Prisons

by KYW’s Tony Romeo

The state Department of Corrections has announced the names for two new state prisons to be built in Montgomery County.

The two new prisons, to be built on the grounds of the existing Graterford prison, will be known as the State Correctional Institution, or “SCI” Skippack Township East and SCI Skippack Township West.

Plans are to build the new facilities on state-owned land near the existing prison beginning in early fall. The design-build concept will enable construction to begin as soon as possible this year by requiring the successful contractors to design the structures as they are being built.

SCI Skippack Township East will be a 2,100 bed, maximum-security prison; and SCI Skippack Township West will be a 2,000 bed, medium-security prison. Once completed within three years, the existing Graterford prison will be mothballed.
