After several weeks of uncertainty, organizers of the TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship announced Wednesday that the annual race will go on as planned, June 7th.
Facing a $500,000 budget gap, the race from the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to Manayunk hit a wall and was nearing cancellation. (see related story)
But David Chauner says additional funding came through in the nick of time.:
"We just got confirmation that we have two new sponsors that have come into the race, making it possible for us to continue the event."
Those sponsors have not yet been announced. Chauner says the go-ahead is also made possible by generous donations from fans who contributed to the Embrace the Race campaign and the efforts of lawmakers.
This will be the 25th year for the event which is considered the premier single-day professional bike race in the country.
