School Sports

by KYW's Dr. Marciene Mattleman

Athletics play an important role in our society and most athletes start their careers in middle and high school.  Competitive sports are fun and teach skills, discipline and teamwork as well as winning and losing with grace.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association requires that every middle and high schooler who wants to participate show proof of good health.  The Philadelphia Scchool District provides a free physical sports exam.

Transportation to the physical exam at Temple University’s Liacouras Center is available on June 6th; but kids must sign up by May 12th.

While the school district’s office of athletics is proud of its many sports, director Robert Coleman longs to see a full District regatta on the river. However, twenty one other sports are offered, male and female—seven each in the fall, winter and spring.

They’re not just the big-name sports, but golf and bowling too.  So if you know kids who want to get in shape and accept a challenge, encourage them to talk to their physical education teacher or email rbcoleman@phila.k12.pa.us to start the ball rolling.
