Sunoco and state Department of Environmental Protection officials are investigating a fuel leak at a Sunoco pump station, by Route 322 near Aston (Delaware County), Pa.
Witnesses reported seeing a large spray of what appeared to be liquid gas or fine mist shooting 100 feet into the air.
Sunoco spokesperson Alan Gillie says they have pinpointed and plugged the leak:
“Right now our number one priority is to make sure the public is safeguarded. Our team is on site recovering product and making sure that we are not impacting the environment."
DEP emergency responder Paul Jardel says there does seem to be some impact in the tributaries leading to Marcus Hook Creek:
"I did see some organisms in stream that were dead and obviously stressed as a result of this incident."
Both Sunoco and DEP say drinking water should not be impacted because the affected water is not part of the public system.
Air samples taken in the area around the leak have been deemed safe. The remediation process is expected to take some time.
