Brachycephalic Breeds

by KYW's Nan Talleno

Brachycephalic is not a familiar word to many people but the dog and cat breeds most certainly are.

Brachycephalic is a Greek word meaning “short-head” or “short-faced.” This term relates to the many dogs and cats with a short muzzle and compressed upper jaw while the lower jaw is in proportion to body size. These dog breeds include the Pug, Boston Terrier, Boxers, Pekinese, Bulldogs, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Chinese Sharpei, French Bulldog, the Cavalier  King Charles Spaniel, the Japanese Chin and English Bulldog among others. The Brachycephalic breeds of cats include Persians, Burmese, and Himalayans.

Due to the structure of the head, muzzle and throat, these breeds are vulnerable to
Brachycephalic Respiratory Syndrome, which affects the different areas of the respiratory tract.  Fortunately, most dogs will not suffer from all aspects of the syndrome but be observant and aware of what your pet may be experiencing.  Symptoms include noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, fainting, and cyanosis (bluish gums and tongue caused by lack of oxygen). These animals are also more prone to heat stroke.

Have your pet examined thoroughly by your veterinarian.
