A move to reduce the size of the Pennsylvania legislature, which got a boost in the state Senate earlier this week, appears to have run into a roadblock in the House.
On Tuesday, a state Senate committee, notwithstanding the misgivings of some members, okayed a bill to reduce the size of the Pennsylvania legislature. But in the House, the issue is being tackled by the Speaker’s Commission on Legislative Reform. And Wednesday, several members of that panel, including Delaware County Democrat Greg Vitali, rejected the idea:
“The problem I do see is the bloated expenditures of the legislature. And I think that’s something, rather than reducing the size, I think we should focus in on that.”
The chairman of the House reform panel agreed that there was a lack of consensus to move forward with a proposal to reduce the size of the legislature, and said the speaker’s commission would instead form a work group to study ways of cutting costs.
