Antidepressants and Teens

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

There is no doubt that antidepressant medication can be a lifesaver for people with severe depression.

Depression has been described as if someone is pulling a shade over a person’s eyes, letting no light in.  The sadness can be overwhelming. The combination of antidepressant medication plus therapy can be extremely effective.

However one group has been studied more thoroughly - teens. This is because certain studies have suggested that certain teens might be at greater risk of suicide if they take antidepressants. The studies are controversial and there are many reports that say this is not the case. In this particular instance it is very important that people work closely with their physicians to look at the options.
