TITLE:    "Reporters Roundup: May 13, 2008" (1st Place) - Steve Nikazy, Anchor; Greg Orlandini, Editor; Dee Patel, News Director
DESCRIPTION:    An example of KYW Newsradio's "All News, All the Time" format in a special "Reporters Roundup" newscast heard live each weekday afternoon.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS: Body of newscast was solid, informational, and had good pacing. Excellent job gathering stories and sound.

CATEGORY:   SPOT NEWS
TITLE:    "Killed in the Line of Duty" (1st Place) - KYW Newsradio Staff
DESCRIPTION:    A Philadelphia police officer is killed after responding to a robbery call.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS: Solid forward movement of story as it unfolded.

    

CATEGORY:   FEATURE
TITLE:  "Positively Philadelphia" (1st Place) - Lauren Lipton, Reporter
DESCRIPTION:    A fun look at some of the interesting and sometimes off-beat stories of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in Philadelphia.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS: Fun. Good idea for feature. Great novelty stories. Good editing, mixing.


CATEGORY:   SERIES
TITLE:    "Look Who's Voting Now" (1st Place) - Ian Bush, Hadas Kuznits & David Madden, Reporters
DESCRIPTION:    An examination of the increasing number of first-time youthful voters inspired to register for the 2008 Presidential election and local contests.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS: Easy to listen to and great use of audio to compel the story and move it forward. Also informative and useful information.

TITLE:    "Hollywood On The Schuylkill" (3rd Place) - Hadas Kuznits, John McDevitt, John Ostapkovich, Tony Romeo, Reporters
DESCRIPTION:    Thanks to Pennsylvania's new movie-making tax incentives, the Philadelphia area is primed to become the "Hollywood" of the East Coast.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Well produced team coverage. Very informative for local audience.


CATEGORY:   CONTINUING COVERAGE
TITLE:    "A Visitor From The Vatican" (2nd Place) - Mike DeNardo, Mark Abrams, Ian Bush, Robin Culverwell, John McDevitt & Al Novack, Reporters
DESCRIPTION:     KYW Newsradio's extended coverage of the first visit to the United States by Pope Benedict XVI, with live coverage from Washington and New York, and reaction from residents in the Philadelphia area.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS: Station reached out and used resources well to cover pope's visit elsewhere and bring it home to Philly Catholics. Nice work!

TITLE:    "Attacking Philadelphia's Dropout Problem"  (2nd place) - Mike DeNardo, Reporter
DESCRIPTION:    A KYW Newsradio special report on Philadelphia's increasing dropout rate, which has climbed to 42 percent in the latest Education Department figures.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS:
Good production values, good pacing, good writing.


CATEGORY:   PUBLIC AFFAIRS
TITLE:    "Stirring the Delaware Valley Melting Pot" (2nd Place) - Karin Phillips, John McDevitt, Tony Romeo and Brad Segall, Reporters
DESCRIPTION:    The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that more than one million foreign-born residents living in Philadelphia are not U.S. citizens.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS: Went out of the way to uncover good information and put it into perspective. Nice use of sound.


CATEGORY:   RADIO SOUND
TITLE:    "The Drexel Phillies Rally" (2nd Place) - John Ostapkovich, Reporter
DESCRIPTION:    Students at Drexel University lend their voices to the thousands cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies during the 2008 World Series.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS: Good job capturing the spirit of competition. Great mixing of sound.
