There is some disturbing news about cancer treatment. Many people with a cancer diagnosis aren’t even advised of the range of treatments available to them.
This is the result of a large federal study which found that many patients may not make the best decision regarding treatment. So what can you do about it? One idea is actually quite simple. Get a second opinion and even a third opinion, and don’t be afraid of offending your doctor about wanting to see someone at a bigger academic medical center or maybe a different place altogether.
Believe it or not, most physicians would actively encourage that, because there are varying opinions about how to treat different types of cancers, even in things where people might think there is a standard of care, that’s not necessarily the case. There are always different options on the horizon with most cancers that we treat. The bottom line is to be your own best advocate or work hard for your family member.
