Research shows that kids who don’t read from June through September tend to lose 2-3 months in skills.
Every summer, a mother calls with the question, “My son only reads sports, what shall I do?” The answer-- “let him read sports.” And the place to get books—sports and others—is at a library.
Kids in Philadelphia should take advantage of the Free Library’s summer reading program for pre-schoolers through teens beginning in all branches on June 15th.
Readers will receive gameboards to keep track of books read, there will be weekly prizes and at the end of the program avid readers are eligible for grand prizes through a citywide raffle.
Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, the Library is unable to buy the books it needs. But everyone can help by going to its website, FreeLibrary.org, click on 10,000 books, and then donate.
Reading is like riding a bike. The more you do it, the better you become. Encourage all kids to become better readers.
