Toomey Skeptical About Specter Nomination

by KYW's Tony Romeo

Former Republican Congressman Pat Toomey says he believes he can beat Arlen Specter in the race for US Senate next year. That’s if Specter is the Democratic nominee – something Toomey isn’t banking on.

“...kind of a funny thing happened on the way to the Republican primary for the US Senate.”

That quip opened up remarks by former Congressman Pat Toomey (above) at a Pennsylvania Press Club luncheon in Harrisburg. Toomey, the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, told reporters afterward that now-Democrat Arlen Specter has raised the question of whether he can be trusted:

“After all, he criss-crossed the Commonwealth repeatedly insisting that he was not going to leave the Republican party, he would stay in the party to the end, and that it was vitally important that Republicans retain 41 votes to provide a check on otherwise unlimited Democratic control.”

Toomey thinks Democratic voters will think twice. Specter at the moment has no serious primary challenger but Democratic Congressman Joe Sestak has said he might jump in the race.

A spokesman for Specter’s campaign says Toomey has changed positions on abortion, and whether to run for governor or senator… and should examine the “glass surrounding him” before throwing stones.
