Organization Wants Bike-Only Lanes on Phila. Roadway

by KYW's Jim Melwert

A father and young son were seriously injured when they were hit by a car while trying to cross the four lanes of MLK Drive near the Art Museum last week.  Now a bicycle-group in the city is urging changes be made to increase safety in the area.

The father and son were in the crosswalk when they were hit.  One car did yield, but another passed that stopped vehicle and hit the two victims.

Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia director Alex Doty says many people speed along the roadway as they use MLK Drive as an alternative for I-76.  He says his organization wants to see one lane each way on MLK Drive become a bike-only lane:

"When you look at the fact that we have Kelly Drive and Martin Luther King Drive, it seems to me that we ought to be able to take one of those drives and return it to a park road."

Doty says this week, during rush-hour, they'll be out there with signs reminding motorists to slow down and that it's the law to yield to pedestrians in cross-walks.
