Bicycle Advocates Campaign Against Unsafe Drivers on MLK Drive

by KYW's Al Novack

A Philadelphia bicycling advocacy group was demonstrating during Tuesday morning's rush hour near the spot where a father and son on a bike were struck last week while crossing the roadway.

At least a half-dozen members of the Greater Philadelphia Bicycle Coalition were out along Eakins Oval, at the foot of the Martin Luther Ling Drive, holding up signs to remind speeding drivers to use caution, slow down, and yield when necessary at crosswalks.

Alex Doty is executive director of the group:

"Yeah, we've been out with our radar gun in a 35 mile-an-hour zone.  We regularly have people who are going over 50 miles an hour as they approach this crosswalk.  We are out here with our bicycle ambassadors and we are holding up signs reminding people that it's a state law to yield to pedestrians within the crosswalk."

The safety reminder comes in the wake of an accident that injured a father and his small son as they used the Eakins Oval crosswalk (see related story).  The boy remained in critical condition at an area hospital.

Doty says members of the Bike Coalition will continue their campaign at various times for the rest of this week.
