All cats can be subject to bladder infections but male cats are at a higher risk due to the narrow structure of the urethra, where crystals can form and accumulate more easily, ultimately causing painful urinary blockage. This is called Urethral Obstruction or
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). This can be a serious life-threatening situation since it completely inhibits your cat from eliminating.
If this occurs, it is imperative that you take your cat to the vet immediately. Symptoms can include decreased appetite, going outside the litter box, straining to urinate, blood in urine, moaning or crying when attempting to use the litter box.
Fortunately, this does not occur in all male cats. Cats that have had one blockage, however, due to these crystal formations are prone to recurrent stones.
Fortunately, there are things you can do to prevent obstructions from occurring. A properly selected food, most often a prescription diet, can inhibit crystal formation. It helps to control the pH levels, such as lower magnesium levels, to ensure that the urine formed is less likely to form crystals. Fresh water must be provided daily. The intake of water is crucial since increased liquid through the system can inhibit the crystals from forming altogether.
Also make sure that the litter box is properly cleaned to encourage proper daily use. Be aware that stress can also be a factor since it can change a cat’s daily routine. A proper diet ensures that these cats can live long happy healthy lives.
