Pairing open space with a highway project? That’s what they’ve done in Gloucester County, where freeholders handed over a 93 acre tract to Harrison Township, land that was targeted for a 100 home development.
The permits were issued. The ground was ready to be broken just outside Mullica Hill when the housing bubble burst.
“It provided us an opportunity.”
Gloucester County Freeholder Steve Sweeney, notes the planned 322 bypass will run through the middle of that development. So they’ve bought up the land and handed the agreement of sale to Harrison Township to use as they see fit, with the bypass in the middle.
“This is a real positive outcome from fixing a traffic problem, by preserving land that’s close adjacent to their athletic fields.”
Harrison Mayor Louis Manzo (right) hopes to, in time, extend those athletic fields and maybe put up a community center. As for the bypass, it’ll be complete in less than 2 years, putting a dent in daily traffic jams through Mullica Hill.
