Macy's Hosts an Amateur Singing Contest in Its Grand Court

by KYW's Lauren Lipton

It was  lunchtime at Macy's in center city, and the usual shopping was going on.

But then...

(singing)

Macy's was holding a singing contest, and anyone could try out!  Grand prize, two tickets to the Tony Awards and a big Macy's shopping spree.

All you had to do was sing a tune from Broadway, right there in front of everyone.

LaVon Fisher-Wilson is currently starring in "Chicago" on Broadway, and to get everyone tuned up she sang her signature song from the show.

Then, people from age 20 to 60 stepped up to the microphone to give it a whirl.

It ended up being a tie between Trevor James, a Temple University student from Allentown, and local actress Ade Laoye.  Laoye was eventually named the winner in a sing-off.

As one contestant put it, "If you win, you win. If you don't win you can still say, 'I was up there singing and hollering in the middle of Macy's and it was a blast.' "

That's Positively Philadelphia!
