The latest Quinnipiac University poll of the New Jersey governor’s race is more bad news for incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine.
Fresh off the primaries, the monthly survey now centers on "likely" (not just "registered" voters), and it gives Republican challenger Chris Christie a healthy 10-point lead over Corzine, 50 percent to 40 percent.
Polling Institute assistant director Clay Richards (right):
"Some of the worst numbers for the governor. He is losing the independent vote 56-32. That’s 24 points down among a group that usually elects Democrats in New Jersey."
And, Richards says, even 19 percent of Democrats are opting for Christie at this point.
Corzine’s approval numbers are at an all-time low for him, and 55 percent say he does not deserve a second term.
Is it the economy? Respondents were asked to list their #1 issue in New Jersey, and the economy came in second -- to taxes.
But Richards adds that Corzine has still got five months before the general election, and a lot of money, to turn those numbers around.
