Phila. Man Charged with Stealing News Stands from Street Corners

by KYW's Lynne Adkins

A Germantown man has been charged with relocating several center city news stands that are owned by other people, for his own use.

Fatai King (above), 40, is charged with five felony counts.

Philadelphia police spokesman Capt. Benjamin Naish says King is accused of a bizarre crime in April that left some local news stand operators stumped:

"Mr. King was arrested in connection with (the theft of) a number of news stands that were relocated at the direction of Mr. King. He's been charged with five counts of theft by receiving stolen property, and theft by unlawful taking."

King is accused of hiring a crane company to pick up the hefty news stands and move them to corners in different parts of the city -- to spots where King had applied for licenses to operate news stands.

Officials at the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections say he had applied for news stand licenses at the locations where the lifted news stands were found, but was not given permission to move anything around.
