Montgomery County, Pa. officials are beefing up patrols along 25 miles of trails along the Schuylkill River after recent reports that some bicyclists have been targeted by hoodlums while riding there.
Cycling enthusiasts are concerned about their safety after reports that one man was hit in the head with a rock and a woman was punched in the face.
Police are investigating both reports, but so far no arrests have been made.
Meanwhile, Montgomery County officials are taking proactive steps to keep the trails safe. Sheriff John Durante is putting some of his deputies out there as a visible deterrent to crime:
"Make no bones about this, the county commissioners want people to have a safe trail and to enjoy the parks. And we stepped up and we are putting our motorcycles on until dark.”
Police say they are hearing about some incidents along the trails for the first time, and they encourage riders to report anything that happens so they can investigate.
In the meantime, they say, riding or walking in pairs might be a good idea.
