Cat-Proofing Your Home

by KYW's Nan Talleno

If you’ve never lived with a cat before, there are several things you should know in order to keep your cat safe.

First, make sure to keep all electrical cords and wires, as well as phone wires, safely out of reach of your kitty.  Organize them neatly (maybe even tape wires safely together out of the way).  Also, keep the cords from your blinds away from your feline, as they love to bat them around like a toy.  Unfortunately, unsupervised, cats can get dangerously tangled.

Keep your plants away from your cat.  Not all are toxic to your cat, but it’s much better to be safe than sorry. For a complete list of poisonous and toxic plants that pose a dangerous problem to cats (and dogs), check the Animal Poison Control Center’s complete list at www.aspca.org.  It’s best though, to keep all plants away from your cats.

And finally, eliminate any small items that your cat can ingest, such as rubber bands, paper clips, twist ties, thumb tacks, etc. Your cat is naturally curious so make sure all that he/she is playing with are the safe and proper cat toys.
