Summer is here, and that means dozens of city swimming pools are opening for the season in Philadelphia.
Kelly Pool in Fairmount Park (above) is one of the largest pools in the city. Department of recreation workers began filling it late Monday so it would be ready for Tuesday's early arrivals.
Indira Boldin (above left) is starting her fourth summer as a pool maintenance assistant here and says this could be her busiest ever, because 27 other public pools are staying closed this summer:
"They're doubling up -- people are going to be coming from all over. So pools are definitely going to be crowded this year. Overcrowded, I'm sure."
Forty-six pools will be opening throughout the city over the next couple of weeks, and Mayor Nutter is hoping to open more after that if he can raise enough through the Splash and Summer Fund he has established.
