Five months after the only supermarket in Ambler, Pa. closed its doors, community leaders and a state lawmaker are continuing their effort to find another grocery store to fill the hole.
The borough is billed as a “walkable” community, many senior citizens who no longer drive and many low-income residents who don’t have cars. Since the Acme on Butler Avenue closed up shop in late January, the search has intensified for a new retailer. State Representative Rick Taylor says they may be getting close to working something out:
“We have a prospect already lined up in place and we’re hoping that we can get everything to fall in place. But it’s still a lot of work to do and there’s still a lot of factors and uncertainties.”
The old supermarket is becoming a CVS so Taylor believes the best location for a new market would be a vacant car dealership. In the meantime he hopes to attract a farmer’s market to the area to give the residents a place to shop.
