Deadbeat dads (and moms) in Montgomery County, Pa. who owe back child support payments have four days to pay up or risk the possibility of going to jail.
Some residents with outstanding warrants have already showed up at the Domestic Relations office in Norristown to make arrangements to pay their back child support.
The amnesty runs until Thursday. After that, sheriff John Durante (above) says his deputies will actively go after parents who still owe money. And he says it may not be pretty:
"We’re going to contact their employers. We’re going to do whatever it takes to get these people that owe child support to get them to pay it and stand up to their responsibilities.”
Failure to comply with a child-support order is punishable by up to six months behind bars.
Federal agents will be used to go after people who owe money but live outside Pennsylvania. Durante believes there’s about $9 million outstanding in Montgomery County alone.
