Unveiling of President Lincoln Statue Takes Place Thursday

by KYW's John Ostapkovich

Running parallel to Welcome America events are Lincoln 200 festivities which begin on Thursday night with the unveiling of a statue.

When they say Land of Lincoln, they're usually not talking about Independence Mall but from Thursday evening through 6pm on Sunday, they'd be wrong. Lincoln 200 co-founder Mary Hagy says our 16th President visited Philadelphia more than any other city, beginning in 1848 when he was a Congressman attending a meeting at the Chinese Museum. That connection got the Chinese government to spring for a statue:

"The Day Before the Decisive Battle is an artistic interpretation of Abraham Lincoln unlike any you have seen in this city and perhaps in the country. We will be working with the City and the Chinese community to determine its final placement in the city."

You can catch its unveiling at 7pm on Thursday next to the Visitor's Center at 6th and Market. It'll be there all weekend.
