Accept the Invitation... But Read the Rules First!

One of the most coveted weekend getaways is one that includes an invitation to a club -- golf, country, or yacht. But Jay Lloyd notes that it could lead to some minor embarrassments if you're not careful.

by KYW's Jay Lloyd

We were a trio of guests at a tony Annapolis club, when a friend's cell phone galvanized the room. All heads turned, and the bartender was at the table faster than the drinks, to warn that active mobile phones are as welcome there as fleas.

Yes, clubs have rules and they’re spelled out, usually on web sites. For instance, invited to play golf you might opt for the pockets and comfort of cargo shorts. Forget it. Bermuda style only.

A sampling of club rules also forcefully warns against wearing hats indoors and at no time backwards. One club advises women that shorts better not creep more than 4 inches above the knee.

For men, shirts must have collars and be tucked in at all times, except for Tommy Bahama styles. Jeans are junk. And forget t-shirts and flip-flops.

I’ve decided to save some embarrassment and read the rules. We’ve come a long way from the days when men wore suits and ladies dresses to stroll the boardwalk at Cape May, but casual goes only so far at the club.
