Fireworks are a tradition this time of year and there’s nothing like the bright colors and excitement surrounding the magnificent burst of light. But unfortunately, for our pets, who are unable to enjoy the spectacle the way people do, this creates a time of confusion, stress and fear and we must take their safety into consideration.
For both dogs and cats, all that they hear is a loud unexpected sound and a booming vibration that alerts fear. It’s best to keep your pets indoors and in a comfortable location where they feel safe and secure. Keep them in a familiar setting. If possible, close the curtains and turn on calming music from the radio or TV as a distraction. Classical music has a soothing effect. Provide their favorite toys and snacks to create a pleasant experience.
Keep an open crate or carrier available in the room in case your dog or cat may feel safer inside. But keep the crate door open so they have flexibility.
Always walk your dog before the fireworks begin. This creates more relaxation and also decreases the chances of accidents later.
