Two women have been sentenced to probation for lying to Philadelphia authorities who were investigating the starvation and neglect death of a handicapped teen in 2006 (see related stories) -- the women were apparently trying to cover up for the victim's mother.
Authorities say 14-year-old Danieal Kelly (above) died a slow, agonizing death, and she weighed just 42 pounds when she died.
But prosecutor Jennifer Selber says defendants Marie Moses and Diamond Brantley told absurd lies to the grand jury.
"Both women claimed to have been in the home the evening before Danieal Kelly's body was found, even at a time where she was likely already dead. And both women claimed not only to have been in the home but to have interacted with Danieal specifically and claimed that she was healthy and did not seem unusually ill or abnormal to them in any way."
Danieal Kelly's mother pleaded guilty earlier to 3rd degree murder with a sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison. Others, including social service employees, are charged in the case and are awaiting trial.
