Phila. Police Kill Homeless Man

by KYW's Tony Hanson

Philadelphia police say an armed homeless man was shot and killed at about 8:30AM Friday morning in the heart of Center City.

Deputy Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel says a Center City district officer responded to a report of disorderly conduct, and when he arrived at the Municipal Services building concourse at Broad and JFK on the north side of City Hall, he was confronted by a man with a utility knife, and the officer called for back-up:

"He called for assistance, other officers responded. As a result of that response with two officers, the male lunged at the officer with the utility knife and both discharged and at this point, fatally wounded the individual. He was pronounced dead at approximately 9:02AM at Hahnemann hospital.

Deputy Commissioner Bethel says both officers have over 20 years experience. The shooting remains under investigation.
