A Philadelphia man prosecutors described as a “modern day Robin Hood” is headed to jail in Montgomery County for using a company credit card to randomly buy gas for people waiting in line at a South Philly Sunoco station.
41-year-old Michael Myers will spend six to 23 months behind bars on theft and related charges. Prosecutors say he used the credit card from the Plymouth Meeting construction company where he worked to fill up tanks, charged the customers half and then pocketed the cash. Over two months, he put nearly $27,000 on the credit card. Prosecutor Tony Gil says the jail sentence could have been longer:
"Had the defendant not paid one penny in restitution, he would easily be looking at a year in prison. The fact that he only got six months is because he paid back close to $25,000.”
The scam unraveled when the company noticed unusually high gasoline charges. Police followed Myers to the gas station where they caught him on surveillance pumping gas for customers in line.
