Use Caution When Handling Fireworks

by KYW’s Michelle Durham

Fourth of July and Fireworks go hand in hand, but Philadelphia Fire officials want people to know how dangerous they are.
Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says this weekend will be a busy one for Philadelphia paramedics:

"This time of the year we get more calls for mostly burns but sometimes we get terrible calls where people have actually had their fingers impacted by firecrackers and things like that."

And sparklers he says are not as innocent as they look and they get hot:

"Over 2,000 degrees and over 2,000 degrees is enough to melt metal. So we want our citizens to be very, very careful with them."

Commissioner Ayers recommends you don't hold sparklers in your hand and soak them in a bucket of water before disposing of them in the trash.
