Groundbreaking for New Prince of Peace Church

by KYW’s Karin Phillips

Groundbreaking ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday July 11th, for the Prince of Peace Baptist church in Strawberry Mansion, which was destroyed in a seven-alarm fire last year.

Pastor Robert Shipman points across the street at what's left of his old church, just the old stone door facade, that will now be the cornerstone of a secondary entrance of a new two-building church complex at 32nd and Berks.

But Pastor Shipman says the building's history won't be forgotten:

“We'll probably put a plaque of some kind in the ground, that's what our plan is, to remember the fact that on this site stood the old William Stokley school building.”

Shipman hopes to open the new church by next February or March. During the past few months, he says the church has met with the surrounding community to figure out what's top on the agenda:

“We're excited about the participation and opportunity that we have for ministry in this neighborhood.”
