Pennsylvania has a new law on the books that will prevent health care providers -- including nursing homes -- from being reimbursed for medical errors.
Governor Rendell held an event this past week, at which he ceremonially signed several health care bills he had previously, officially signed into law last month. One of those measures will make sure health care providers are no longer reimbursed for serious, preventable errors such as operating on the wrong organ or limb.
The governor says nursing homes will be included, which will participate in developing a list of such adverse events specific to their industry. That, the governor says, will be a first in the nation:
“And already, other states are monitoring the development of this list here in Pennsylvania. So we are breaking new ground, and it is a great thing for nursing home residents.”
The governor says the bill for patients who experience preventable, adverse medical events in hospitals totals more than $300 million a year.
