While Bucks County, Pa. prosecutors decide whether to charge the owner of a Penndel day care center in connection with the death of her friend’s two-year-old son who was left in her hot minivan for several hours last week, the attorney who represented a Delaware County grandfather who left his grandson in a hot car last year believes these cases are hard for prosecutors to prove.
Edward Kanterman pled “no contest” to an involuntary manslaughter charge and was given probation and community service (see related story). He was supposed to drop off his 14-month-old grandson at day care, but forgot and went to work leaving the child in the car.
Defense attorney Eugene Bonner believes it would have been a tough case for the prosecution if it went to trial:
“I think the prosecution wanted to send a message, maybe bring awareness to the danger of I guess transporting children and have people think about it.”
Bonner says Kanterman pled guilty to spare his daughter any more heartache. Bucks County authorities are still investigating this latest case. Rimma Shvartsman picked up the child Wednesday morning, drove to the Fairy Tales Day Care Center, parked and left the boy in the minivan.
