Summer school resumes in earnest on Monday for thousands of Philadelphia kids.
Nearly 40,000 students are in summer school in Philadelphia -- twice as many as last year, but it's not because that many kids failed.
District operations chief Tomas Hanna says the district has expanded summer school beyond remedial classes:
"We really want to mitigate learning loss. And so young people who are engaged, whether it's in academic activities or chess or fitness activities or music and arts, we know that that goes a long way to help mitigate learning loss. And I think that's what the main objective here is."
Summer school runs during July at 131 schools in the city.
