Bright Future Seen for Joe Savery, Now with Reading Phillies

by KYW's Matt Leon

Lefthander Joe Savery was the Phillies' first-round pick in 2007, and now he is starting to emerge as a big-time prospect.

Savery, 23, is thriving in his first year of AA baseball, but despite that success he says he tries not to think about the next steps on the ladder:

"One of my goals this year was to enjoy the game and just to be where I'm at, and try to enjoy these guys and enjoy the team and enjoy the process, and not worry so much about what's going on in Triple-A or Philadelphia."

Savery has been the ace of the Reading Phillies' staff, going 11-1 with a 3.34 ERA.

An outstanding hitter in college (Rice University), he's also been okay at the plate, hitting .219 in 32 at-bats.  And he knocked in his first run of the season last Saturday against Connecticut.
