US senator Bob Casey was in Bensalem (Bucks County), Pa. on Monday, touring three clinics serving poor and low-income families and the elderly.
Cathy Giorgio is the clinic manager of the Bucks County Health Improvement Partnership adult health clinic.
She was explaining to Casey the increase in the number of people they are seeing at the clinics, run by St. Mary Medical Center at a facility on Knights Road:
"They had insurance. And frankly, they look at me and the look on their face is like, 'I can't believe this is the United States and this is happening to me.' "
Casey (in file photo) listened to concerns of medical staff, and said this is why health care reform is needed:
"We have no choice. The idea of stopping and saying, 'Let's study this some more' is really ridiculous. We know exactly what needs to be done. It's just a question of whether we\'re going to put in the time and the effort and show the kind of commitment that I think a lot of Americans expect us to show."
Casey says he expects the House and Senate Joint Health Committees to begin work on health care reform this summer, with a bill ready for the president by October.
