Census Officials Brief N. Phila. Residents on How to Get Counted
|
by KYW's Nancy Griffin
Residents and community leaders gathered on Monday for a public forum in North Philadelphia on the 2010 census.
Census Bureau regional director Fernando Armstrong (above, holding official form) says Census information is critical to decisions from congressional representation to federal funding:
"Every ten years, the House of Representatives in Washington is apportioned based on Census figures. So how many representatives are sent from Pennsylvania to Congress in Washington depends on that."
State Rep. Angel Cruz says Census forms arrive by mail in March:
"I contacted the people from the Census Bureau and had some questions of my own. I asked them if I would do a forum would they come, and they said absolutely. I invited the community groups, and even though I am a state legislator -- not a federal -- this is important for my community, because there is money out there that could be allocated as a result of the Census."
The Census Bureau will provide additional information sessions and translations services for non-English speakers -- and there are more details on the Census web site.
