Family-Oriented Cruise Ships Keep the Kids Occupied

When adults take summer cruises to tropical destinations, it’s a safe bet that children or teens may be involved in the equation. This week, Jay Lloyd notes that a ship cruise can be a good way to launch a family getaway.

Think about the possibilities -- romantic dinners and dancing.  With the kids?! Yes, but also without the kids.

Today, modern cruise ships keep toddlers to teens active and fed while parents are free to relive those dating days.

Brian Walter is a Norwegian Cruise Lines hotel director, sailing out of Philadelphia:

"We have the teen disco (and other) fun activities that they can do in a group."

...such as Wii Bowling (right).

A big part of Walter's job is running the staff that runs the children's activities -- taking the little ones on a pirate treasure hunt along the pool deck, or chaperoning teen dances. He says they even think about food that would tempt a teen or toddler:

"We have a specially created kids' menu, and we also have a galley that caters just to the teens."

And for those parents who might worry about a youngster's safety at sea, Walter notes that trained cruise staffers are well aware of youthful curiosity:

"It’s as child-proof as we can make it when it comes to safety."

But for adults wanting to cruise when kids don’t, think school days.
