Worker Dies in Vat of Chocolate in Camden, NJ

by KYW's Pat Loeb

Camden, NJ police were investigating the death of 29-year-old man who fell into a chocolate melting tank in an industrial accident.

Police say the man was a worker at Lyons & Sons, a cocoa warehouse in the 700 block of North 36th Street.

Authorities say the victim was loading giant pieces of solid chocolate into the vat about 10:30am when he lost his footing and slipped in. Though the chocolate was hot, the prosecutor's office says the cause of death was trauma from being struck by an agitator that was stirring the liquefied chocolate.

Rescue workers recovered his body about 10 minutes later, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man was later identified as Vincent Smith II of Camden (above right).  The company declined comment.
