The union representing Acme workers at 40 supermarkets in Philadelphia and the suburbs rallied in King of Prussia Thursday afternoon, hours before their contract was set to expire at midnight. They’ll be working Friday, but for how long remains unclear.
"We will not have a strike vote."
So members of the United Food and Commercial Workers have vowed to stay on the job...even as management says they “reserve the right” to impose it’s final offer on Friday. Union President Wendell Young (Pictured):
"Now what happens after that might be a different story. A lot depends on what the company does."
The union wants to work under the current, extended contract and their lawyer suggests imposing that offer, which was overwhelmingly rejected by the union last month, would change working conditions to the point it could be considered, under Pennsylvania law as a legal lockout.
That interpretation, by the way, is not shared by Acme although a spokesman won’t say what, if any changes, are on the way. Union members are set to meet Wednesday to decide what action, if any, to take.
