An investigation is underway into the death of a Mount Holly police dog.
"Patton" a five-year old golden retriever and an explosives detecting K-9 for the Mount Holly police department died earlier this week after allegedly being left inside a hot vehicle too long. The dog's handler Officer Kara McIntosh was responsible for caring for Patton both on and off duty.
Mount Holly Police Chief Steven Martin:
"The department and the officer are shocked. The department is supporting the officer and you treat the loss as if you lost one of your own."
New Jersey's SPCA is awaiting results of an autopsy as to determine if the actions that resulted in Patton's death were criminal or negligent.
"Once they conclude their investigation we will have more on what exactly happened and what exactly transpired."
Martin says officer McIntosh was off Wednesday and Thursday and will be returning to work soon.
