Former W. Catholic Standout RB Curtis Brinkley Wounded in Cheltenham

by KYW's Al Novack

San Diego Chargers running back Curtis Brinkley, who lives in Philadelphia, was shot and wounded late Thursday night in Cheltenham Township (Montgomery County), Pa.

Brinkley, 23, was shot about 12 midnight while inside his car near Ashbourne Road and Spring Avenue. Cheltenham police say he managed to drive to a safe area near West Cheltenham Avenue and Oaklane Road, where he was found by police and rushed to Einstein Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds.

Brinkley was listed in critical condition.

Detectives could offer no motive for the incident, and police have no suspects. The gunman is said to have fled on foot to a waiting car on a street near the shooting scene.

Brinkley is a graduate of West Catholic High School and Syracuse University. He went undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft, but was signed by San Diego as a free agent shortly after the draft.
