Local Law Enforcement Warns of Craigslist Scams

by KYW's Pat Loeb

Philadelphia police say at least three people have been robbed at gunpoint after answering ads on the web site Craigslist. Buyers should use caution when using the site.

The warnings are right on the web site: meet in a public place, consider taking someone with you. But police spokesman, Lt. Frank Vanore, says three times since January, would-be buyers have been robbed while responding to ads:

“The perpetrator of these crimes is obviously fictitiously placing an item on craigslist for sale.”

Vanore says, last weekend, a victim lost $800 and a cell phone, when he went to pick up a TV at a private address in East Falls. An earlier victim lost $1,500 when she tried to buy a car through an ad:

“It's just a very concerning, very dangerous way to set these meetings up blindly, without knowing where you're going, who you're meeting and we're just trying to put a little caution out there.”

Vanore says police have no suspects and they don't know if the cases are linked.
