Riding a bicycle is fun and great exercise, but it can also lead to injury and even death.
Bicycle riding lands too many kids in the local emergency room and Dr. Christopher Haines, the medical director of emergency medicine at Philadelphia's St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, says there are things you can do to prevent many of the mishaps:
“Every time you get on a bicycle you need to wear a helmet, whether it's a short ride or a ride in your driveway. Many, many injuries happen each year. Bicyclists are being hit by a car or just falling.”
Make sure the bike fits the child, if it's too big to handle that could lead to falls and injuries. Use hand signals when riding in traffic and always ride with the vehicles. Nearly a quarter of the bicycle and car collisions happen when a bike is going against traffic.
