Delaware County Congressman Joe Sestak is spending the month of July criss-crossing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in advance of his expected run for the Senate next year.
Sestak may only be in his second term in the house but believes he has a chance:
“The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee asked me, out of the blue, to get into this race back in February and I said, ‘Well, I’d rather just focus on my district.’ But I told them I’d think about it.”
That was before incumbent Arlen Specter switched parties and the committee asked him to withdraw. Sestak declined and has stopped in half of the state’s 67 counties; meeting with party chairs, media and just plain folk. He’ll complete the tour in about a week and talk to his family one more time. But bank on it. He’s running.
Look for an announcement before the end of August. He knows he’ll be bucking the political establishment but notes that a year before the first Presidential primaries, few gave Barack Obama much of a chance either.
