Phila. Canoe Club Hosts Open House

by KYW's Jim Melwert

Members call it the best kept secret in Philadelphia.  And nestled on the banks of the Schuylkill and Wissahickon Rivers, the Philadelphia Canoe Club's annual open house gives the club a chance to show off to the public.

Commodore Rosemary Rau recommends anyone interested in canoing or kayaking sign up for one of their classes:

"We teach kids all the up to people in their 60s.  Withiin the club there's a variety of ages from 18-years old all the way up to 80.  And the man who's 80 years old is out on the river right now."

That 80-year-old man would be whitewater enthusiast Dave Gunther who joined the club in 1972.  He says in the 37 years he's been with the club he's seen it transition to more of a social club:

"There's a brotherhood amongst us.  And sisterhood.  Botherhood and sisterhood."
