Delco Homeowners Snub Sheriff's Foreclosure Aid

by KYW's David Madden

With mortgage foreclosures up dramatically in this floundering economy, troubled homeowners are looking for all the help they can get. Delaware County is hoping to follow the lead of Philadelphia by offering a program that could buy those in arrears a little extra time.

More than 400 homes went up for sheriff sale in Media on Friday, almost half of them after sheriff Joe McGinn ordered a two month delay to give people a chance to get professional help.

McGinn says warnings went out to those who got the break in May:

"We sent a brochure of Consumer Credit Counseling Services in the mail that we sent with them and I’m just surprised when I saw that nobody at all had gotten back to them."

Two tried on their own to get help but failed. McGinn’s now attempting to get court approval of a plan that would require those who live in the homes getting foreclosure notices to contact assistance agencies in return for court-monitored intervention.

There’s some skepticism over whether the Philadelphia plan would work in Delaware County. A judge is expected to consider the idea next month.
